MODEL ENGINEERING
Here at the Darke County Steam Threshers we have many activities for model engines to do as well. There’s always a handful of half and quarter scale models of different manufactures exhibited.
At the 52nd reunion we had a quarter scale sawmill in operation several times each day. There are model sized threshing and baling demonstrations. Each year we have an exhibitor travel all the way from Canada with his quarter scale case steam engine and baler. He operates his baling outfit throughout the day. We also use model equipment to operate corn shelling and grinding equipment. This is a hands on exhibit so the kids can dig in and get their hands dirty while learning how it was done in the 1900’s.
Every day we have a tug o’ war contest in which we tie a large rope to one of our brave engines. Then we have a contest to see how many kids it takes to pull the engine backwards! Our models are free to test their power on the incline hill. Sometimes the engineers like to show off their skills and balance the engine on the teeter totter!
